Farmworkers across South Africa will be earning a little more after the new minimum wage came into effect on Tuesday.
Workers who work nine hours a day will now earn R128.26. This is an increase of R8.20 per hour.
Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant said that the increase had been decided upon following extensive consultation with employers and employees in the farming and forestry sectors.
Farmers’ unions, though, have raised concerns over how the drought will impact on the wage increase. Farmers in the North West province have been the hardest hit by the drought.
Agri-North West says that both commercial and emerging farmers are deep in debt and that sticking to the new wage would be difficult.
The National Emergent Red Meat Producers’ Organisation also raised its concerns, with the organisation’s Maikano Maselwanyane saying that farmers do not have enough income from their farms as some are farming on communal land.
